Dolce Vita – Cancún

dolce_vitaMany visitors to Cancún unfortunately don´t leave their all-inclusive hotels and get stuck to the boring internationalized food served in the hotel restaurants.

I personally try to avoid all-inclusive and be able to venture out and try local restaurants. Even if you prefer the comfort that all-inclusive offers, I highly recommend to leave the comfort zone once in a while and see what the local environment has to offer…

Dolce Vita, Cancún, centro… this Italian restaurant is only a few minutes cab ride from the hotel zone in Cancún and is without a doubt one of the best Italian restaurants in México.

From the moment we entered the restaurant the service was welcoming and pleasing. Dolce Vita offers a good choice of seafood, pizzas, pastas and other typical Italian dishes.

I decided for the white fish Carpaccio of the day as an appetizer and scallopini a la marsala (port style italian wine) as a main dish. While we were waiting for the food we were served an excellent house made quail paté with some bread. All the dishes were outstanding and it felt as if we had dinner in Italy.

The wine card… has a good choice and is very well structured. As I like to accompany the food with wine from the same country I paid special attention to the Italian section. The card offers a good choice of Italian wines which is not common in Mexico (unfortunately not even in Italian restaurants). They have an especially good section of Tuscans and Super Tuscans. The card is organized by region and… what I really liked… by the body structure of the wine… so you find several Super Tuscans, starting from medium body to full body. So even if you are not familiar with the wine maker or the brand, you easily find exactly what you are looking for.

We decided for a medium bodied Super Tuscan from 2012 which went excellent with the scallopini.

The Italian owner stepped by several times at our table, answering questions about the wine list and ensuring that everything was to our liking.

After we finished the delicious meal and wine we were offered a digestivo on the house. I chose a sambuco blanco with my coffee espresso.

I don´t know many restaurants nowadays where an appetizer and an after-dinner-drink is served on the house. This was more Italian hospitality then we expected and we left extremely content into the hot cancún night….
